Bungalow 67
Mathieu M. Bouchard
A recipient of the Prix Avatar 2020 and sponsored by Première Ovation, a measure for supporting emerging artists, Mathieu M. Bouchard presents Bungalow 67.
During his residency at Avatar, Bouchard began a project about his house. He first created devices with game cameras, which are cameras triggered by motion sensors. He set up these devices in his house and on his property. The cameras captured an image whenever they sensed the smallest movement in front of the lens. At the end of six months, he examined the thousands of videos and photographs collected, and it seemed to him as though time felt increasingly thicker. Through this exploration, he investigated notions of time and duration by constructing a web work divided into several spaces, echoing the spaces of his house. Each space presents an experiment based on the aesthetic of game cameras. The work becomes an investigation of voluminous temporality and poetic everydayness.
This project was made possible thanks to the Première Ovation in visual, media, and applied arts.
The Prix Avatar supports a project by a Visual and Media Arts undergraduate student at Université Laval.
