Invisible Places

Claudio Bueno

Installation / Performance

Created during a residency in fall 2011, the Invisible Places mobile app was an invisible sound monument in Quebec City’s Old Port paying homage to eight Canadian women who died at sea while working as wireless radio operators during the two world wars.

The app features local singers who personify these women, whose songs can now be forever heard as if sung by sirens on the banks of the Saint Lawrence. When listeners approach the monument’s location with GPS-enabled smartphones, the mobile app plays the sirens’ voices.

Claudio Bueno was invited to Avatar as part of an exchange with the sound and image museum in São Paulo, Brazil, and in partnership with La Bande Vidéo and Quebec City’s La Chambre Blanche.
