At Avatar, creation and production are supported in a concrete way. You have access to high-performance equipment, adapted workspaces, specialized advice, shared expertise, collaborative research and exchange.
Professionally equipped premises: recording studio, control room, editing studio, electronics lab and workspace, encourage exploration, discussion and production. A constantly updated range of specialized equipment offers a broad spectrum of technical solutions and state-of-the-art production and post-production tools.
An exceptional piece of equipment: the Disklavier, an electromechanical piano controlled by a MIDI system, enables artists to conceive singular works for piano.
The equipment is available for rental – or loan, for our members, during our opening hours: Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

BE A MEMBER
Membership runs from July 1 to June 30 of each year.
RENEWABLE ANNUALLY
Any independent creator whose practice is related to the mandate and who wishes to use the organization’s services for non-commercial purposes;
Anyone with relevant experience in audio or electronic art;
Anyone wishing to promote the goals and objectives of the organization.
UTILISATEUR member:
- has the right to rent the organization’s equipment and studios (after acceptance of their project by the team) – subject to availability;
- is kept informed of the organization’s activities;
- is offered a copy of one of Avatar’s publications with each membership renewal, while stocks last.
Any museum or heritage institution, non-profit organization (NPO) in the arts, culture and social sectors that wishes to encourage, promote and support the organization’s goals and objectives, in line with its mandate and who wishes to use the organization’s services for non-commercial purposes.
ORGANISME member:
- has the right to rent the organization’s equipment and studios (after acceptance of their project by the team) – subject to availability;
- is kept informed of the organization’s activities.
Any independent professional artist or curator whose practice is related to the center’s mandate and whose application has been accepted by the Board of Directors, upon its recommendation or upon submission of a file and who wishes to use the organization’s services for non-commercial purposes;
Anyone with experience relevant to the center’s mandate who has been nominated by the Board of Directors, or whose application has been accepted by the Board;
Any person wishing to encourage, promote and support the goals and objectives of the organization, whose candidacy has been retained by the Board of Directors, upon its proposal or upon submission of a file.
ACTIF member:
- has voting rights at the organization’s general or special meetings;
- may be elected to the Board of Directors;
- has the right to rent the organization’s equipment and studios (after acceptance of their project by the team) – subject to availability;
- is kept informed of the organization’s activities;
- is offered, on request, a copy of one of the publications produced by Avatar, while stocks last.

Payment of membership fees is compulsory each year. Otherwise, active members will lose their status as active members and will have to resubmit their application to the Board of Directors.
Any independent professional artist or curator whose practice is related to the center’s mandate and whose application has been accepted by the Board of Directors, upon its recommendation or upon submission of a file and who wishes to use the organization’s services for non-commercial purposes;
Anyone with experience relevant to the center’s mandate who has been nominated by the Board of Directors, or whose application has been accepted by the Board;
Any person wishing to encourage, promote and support the goals and objectives of the organization, whose candidacy has been retained by the Board of Directors, upon its proposal or upon submission of a file.
ACTIF member:
- has voting rights at the organization’s general or special meetings;
- may be elected to the Board of Directors;
- benefits from ongoing support and privileged access to Avatar studios for artistic projects, subject to availability of staff and premises;
- may benefit, during the year of membership and in exchange for payment of the $150 membership fee :
– free access to equipment, subject to availability;
– 10h of technical support, subject to availability;
– small studio, subject to availability;
– 5 days of large studio, subject to availability;
- is kept informed of the organization’s activities;
- is offered, on request, a copy of one of the publications produced by Avatar, while stocks last.

Priority is given to needs related to the organization’s programming.
If the equipment borrowed is strictly dedicated to the realization of artistic projects, the equipment will remain free of charge. However, if the equipment borrowed is dedicated to a project linked to an employment contract, Avatar will charge the usual rental rate.
Payment of the membership fee is compulsory each year. Otherwise, active members will lose their active membership status and will have to resubmit their application to the Board of Directors.
Grand studio – Avatar
Members are the driving force behind Avatar. Established and emerging artists alike, they all contribute to the artistic renewal of the center and the discipline.
Being a member means taking part in the life of Avatar, supporting the creation and dissemination of audio and electronic art projects in Quebec City and around the world. It also means privileged access to our member services, which include artistic support, access to technical expertise, and spaces and equipment adapted to the development of your projects, at preferential rates.
Avatar offers multiple fields of exploration in audio and electronic art. Whether you’re a sound artist, a media arts professional or a beginner in audio art, our training courses and workshops offer you multiple fields of exploration with seasoned professionals. Unless otherwise specified, training courses take place on Avatar premises. You must be an Avatar member to participate in training sessions.
