Monopole

Georges Azzaria

Publication / 2002

Georges Azzaria is an instrument inventor whose creations fall somewhere between sculpture and traditional musical instruments.

Monopole was an exercise in metaphorical recreation/re-creation. Azzaria cut his performers loose on sound machines he put together out of wind and string instruments, turntables, and two-way radios in random intercommunication with instructions to tell stories and be creative. The sounds and rhythms they generated experimenting with them were then reworked into new sonic universes where fun and play were the name of the game.

Monopole contains 30 tracks recorded in studio or in concert. Also included is a 36 page booklet with colour pictures of more than 30 instruments and an essay by Fabrice Montal entitled “Les récréatures de sport” (Sport Recreatures).
