Duet of artists Sébastien Cliche and Julie Faubert will be offering Il y aurait une table mais vous faites parfois semblant an unprecedented sound performance on January 31, 2018. The performance stems from the duet’s research during a residency at Avatar. Sharing a collective studio, Cliche and Faubert’s respective practices have often overlapped. Their research is criss-crossed by many pathways revolving around a particular relationship with text, speech, words, and their presence in space.
As part of a research project funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et Culture (FRQSC), in collaboration with Avatar and La CHAMBRE BLANCHE, artist and Université Laval professor Julie Faubert is presenting SON/CONTEXTE 2018, an international encounter on contextual sound practices.
Artists Brandon LaBelle (Berlin), Alex Reynolds (Brussels – Barcelona) and duet Jen Reimer & Max Stein (Montréal) are invited to shape a contextual sound experimentation in the company of students from the École d’art de l’Université Laval. Dalie Giroux (University of Ottawa) will also lay eyes and words on the creation projects, turning the art into a world event.
Sébastien Cliche is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Montréal. He questions forms of narrative and the place the viewer can take in their construction. For the last twenty years, he has been producing installations, photographs and text, video and sound-based art. His work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, notably at Centre d’art contemporain de Meymac (France, 2008), l’Œil de Poisson (Québec City, 2010), Momenta Art (New York, 2013), Circa (Montreal, 2015) as well as in established festivals such as MUTEK (Montreal, 2005 and 2010). As a curator, he has produced the exhibition The Hearing Eye (Montreal, Ottawa and Québec City, 2007-2008). In 2012, he received the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman fellowship in contemporary art. In 2014, he has published Doulbings a book about the project La doublure presented at Gallerie de l’UQAM (2012).
Since 2001, Julie Faubert has carried out numerous installations and interventions that combine practical writing and picking objects with relational approaches, sound practices with urban drifts. In a transdisciplinary perspective, Julie Faubert is interested in the space occupied / unoccupied by the body in the West. It questions the founding dualism of our perceptions, our spaces and our words. Through the creation of places, she continues to reflect on the relationships between the body and thought in our constructions / creations of meaning. Over the years, the installations and the interventions, the sound becomes an anchor, an articulator of the body-space relationship. The visitors’ movements of visitors (real, imaginary, physical, psychic …) act as intermediaries between the visual and the sound, they come to nourish the act of listening and the intimate encounter that generates the sound. Deeply engaged in the search for a real public space, his her practice invests worlds parallel to that of art: industry, the cloister, the street, the quarterborough. In a crossed-over with her practice, she is currently completing a doctorate Ph.D. (Ph.D. Espacio público y regeneración urbana: arte y sociedad, University of Barcelona / Ph.D in development, Université de Montréal) which focuses more specifically on the soundtracks urban audio circuits and the aesthetic, ethical, and political issues related to the presence of the body in the public space.
