Map-O-Mix

Louis Ouellet

Publication / 2006

Map-O-Mix is a work that singlehandedly engineers multiple encounters between 200 excerpts from the traditional music of peoples all over the world.

It reveals their differences, but most of all their rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic similarities, creating entirely new forms of musical fusion.

Excerpts are blended through an ingenious stop-and-go mechanism generating overlaps of between two and eight excerpts of varying durations. It can also use other variables, such as source volume, onset and disappearance intensity envelope, and excerpt length, speed, or pitch. The variables may be controlled by performers and improvisers or through a graphic interface or physical installation. The interactions can be structured through a conceptual system provided by other artists or through continuous more- or less-controlled aleatory processes.
