Biography

Martin Messier is a composer, performer and videomaker. While sound is the driving force behind his work, Messier is also interested in the meeting between electroacoustic music and other art forms, as well as in artistic collaboration. It is thus through the relationship between sound and material (objects or bodies) that Messier’s work takes shape. He gives life to sound through diverse objects such as alarm clocks, pens and self-designed machines. At the heart of this encounter between sounds and objects is the idea of pushing the everyday imagination a little further, of magnifying these objects by giving them a voice and by reinventing their functions. At the centre of the dialogue between sound and the body in movement is a desire to reverse the hierarchical relationship that normally exists between music and choreography, so that sound becomes the engine of movement. In 2010, Messier founded 14 lieux, a sound production company for the performing arts, thereby offering a platform for the presentation and promotion of this type of sound creation.
