ARIANE PLANTE

Lucille et Cécile

2013

On my porous surface
Your tracks
Are like the fragile
Flight of birds
The crossing will be long   slow
Sing once more
As I cling to your feathers

Biography

Ariane Plante lives in Quebec City. She divides her time between her diverse professional activities in the cultural domain and her artistic practices in sound and media arts. Whenever she can, the artist immerses herself in landscapes, probing the migratory experience, on the road, and then simply drifting. She draws upon the anecdotal accounts of everyday life, interviewing the people she meets along the way, gathering sounds, ambiances, words, images and movements. Interweaving poetry, geography, the ecology of sound, a site-specific approach and ethnography, the artist’s work is based on meaningful encounters and takes the form of collages, portraits and imaginary sites.

About the work

Lucille et Cécile is a collage of excerpts from my interviews with Lucille, a snickering nonagenarian, and Cécile, a lively but frail octogenarian. The two conniving friends, who have known each other since the age of seventeen, agreed to share their memories, anecdotes, preoccupations, jokes. These interviews are part of a project for a documentary essay on the transmission of memory, aging and daily life.
