Compost Artistes Anonymes (1997)

Avatar’s Compost series looked at nature’s transformative cycle, coming down squarely on the side of decomposing and recomposing our society’s waste sound.

The Compost audio creation project was based on the principle of recuperation as practised in filmmaking. Audio artists collected sonic waste—samples, musical fragments, electroacoustic treatments, and other discards—for reworking. Compost yielded an eclectic, complex sound world from these bits of kitsch, sound sculpture, television clips, chewing noises, and Dave Brubeck played on barrel organ.

Compost was released on an irregularly shaped disk with many short, anonymous untitled tracks. Not a scrap of it is subject to copyright.

The disk was launched on September 18, 1997.
