Tango
Tango Martin Meilleur (2001)

Featuring spatiotemporal interference from the wonderful world of shortwave radio, Tango is an assembly of radio snippets of every type and frequency.

Featuring spatiotemporal interference from the wonderful world of shortwave radio, Tango is an assembly of radio snippets of every type and frequency. Everything in Tango was picked up on the open airwaves and recorded with a microphone to preserve the specific tone and filtration of Meilleur’s radios. And unlike digital signals, analog ones are sensitive to natural phenomena. Signals can be superimposed within a single frequency. Even landforms echo inside them. If there is a storm over the Atlantic, we hear it, and solar flares leave their own particular radio signature.

The recording project was developed during Avatar’s Ondes courtes (Shortwave) residency. Tango was broadcast on CKIA’s Excavation sonore in July 2000 and on Radio-Canada Chaîne culturelle’s Le Navire Night on October 28, 2001. The recording was launched on May 29, 2001, at Talkie, a performance organized by Martin Meilleur and David Michaud.
