Talkie
Talkie Boris Firquet, Martin Meilleur et David Michaud (2001)

The gallery contained four speakers at the four cardinal points, each receiving signals from a walkie-talkie carried by one of four randomly chosen volunteers. Each walker/transmitter was provided with a city map, chronometer, camera, and walkie-talkie. Their task was to work through a series of six points every five minutes, walking in a straight line in one of the four cardinal directions.

The project designers thus produced a real-time exercise in time spatialization. The different sound ambiances of the four neighbourhoods the volunteers walked through were heard superimposed on one another. Listeners felt the increasing distance of the participants in the weakening of their sound signals strengthening of interference.

The event was broadcast on CKIA’s Excavation sonore the same night. It also featured the CD launches of Martin Meilleur’s Tango and Eltractor’s Elradio.
