Avatar presented the interactive sound installation Spatial Sound at Mois Multi 4 in 2003. De Nijs and Van der Heide’s piece has a rotating arm with a speaker on one end. It detects people’s presence, and the more people there are, the more it rattles, roars, and spins—at speeds up to 100 km/h! Its vibrations turn into powerful noises and combine different various sonorities and rhythmic patterns. After their initial shock, viewers were invariably drawn to the device and would set about exploring the space in order to interact physically with it.
Spatial Sound was produced, created, and presented through the participation of Avatar and Productions Recto-Verso.
