Over the years, Avatar has developed a number of unique new software applications for manipulating sounds and images in real time. This tradition of digital instrument-making has developed along with Avatar artists-in-residence’s needs and ideas since 1993. Among these instruments, three in particular have been open-ended enough that other artists have been able to use them, with startlingly different results.

SoftAvatar can be a live group performance or a testing laboratory for shaping new works. One SoftAvatar live audio performance at Mois Multi 6, for example, involved seven artists and four applications (mapOmix, MachinesMOTOR, JR digital macchina ricordi, and shredder_REGLUER.)
