SN et Spermutologie-cycle Louis Ouellet (2005)

Louis Ouellet’s two pieces of conceptual audio art from his 2005 Avatar residency were truly Cagean scores: SN and Spermutologie-cycle.

Louis Ouellet’s two pieces of conceptual audio art from his 2005 Avatar residency were truly Cagean scores: SN and Spermutologie-cycle. SN is a simple arithmetical system: 11 fingers each play their own notes, with the 1st finger playing every other beat; the 2nd playing every 3rd beat, and so on and so forth. After 60 beats, each finger goes down a fifth. The same rhythmic pattern is applied several times, some using famous modes taken from Debussy, Ravel, and Balinese music, while others apply aleatoric techniques.

Spermutologie-cycle assembles the permutations of six numbers played in place by the left hand and retrograde in the right. The space between the fingers increases and diminishes, even requiring hand crossings. Other variables fluctuate cyclically according to permutation numbers.
