Shift
Shift Daniel Jolliffe (1998)

Daniel Jolliffe presented Shift at Avatar in December 1998. The piece—part sculpture and part technology—gave new meaning to the word interactive by linking together an object, the viewer’s body, and the act of looking.

A round platform was placed next to a big metal hemisphere set on the floor with the round side down, like a bowl. When the participant stepped onto the platform, his or her movements triggered a response from the bowl—its shifting and rocking controlled by a hidden electronic system. The difference in mass between the participant and the bowl however meant that the movements never matched up exactly, and participants would twist, writhe, and tie themselves in knots trying to control it.
