Piano à numéros is an essay on the art of translation, a project addressing the myriad aspects of multidisciplinary art and its involvement with computers. In 2000 Avatar examined the act of translation computers imply by inviting two artists-in-residence—Thecla Schiphorst, a Vancouver-based dance artist, and Dominique Blain, a Montreal-based visual artist—to produce an experimental work based on these notions.

Piano à numéros asked Schiphorst and Blain to reflect on how an artistic process in a given discipline might be translated into another and on the role of technology in such a translation. Jocelyn Robert acted as project curator, subsequently asking Dot Tuer and Alain-Martin Richard to reflect on the questions this research had generated.

The book, including a CD of sound experiments, was launched in Quebec City in 2000.
