L’école d’aviation Diane Landry (2000)

Diane Landry’s work L’école d’aviation was a multi-coloured island made up of 24 umbrellas perched on top of rods of varying lengths. The umbrellas opened and closed intermittently and slowly at a rhythm reminiscent of human breathing. A doleful melody produced by small motorized accordions accompanied these large, colourful “lungs.” The umbrella/accordion combinations—hybrids of sound and light—were sculptures, traditional stringed instruments, and electronic DIY all in one. The result was magical.

Avatar contributed to the development of the work by designing the electronic interface and automation software for the installation.
