Avatar’s electronic laboratory, Le Nom de la Chose, developed a software interface in 2000 for Paul Litherland’s Drumwriter project. Drumwriter translated drum sounds into computer code to spell words, select from word lists, or control video image sequences.

Drumwriter’s first use in performance was co-presented by Avatar on February 23 and 24, 2001, at Mois Multi 2.

The tools would later be adapted for Paul Litherland once again. He used them for India, a part of Peter Gabriel’s and Robert Lepage’s work Zulu Time
