Nouveaux médias : méthodes et pratiques Symposium

For its Nouveaux médias : méthodes et pratiques (New Medias: Methods and Practices) Symposium presented in partnership with the École des arts visuels de l'Université Laval and the Galerie des arts visuels, Avatar is taking up quite a challenge by adopting an approach based on an abstract issue. The idea is to generate observations and discussions in order to reflect on artistic practices and new media, and to raise perspectives.

In the course of their work, artists take part in the creation of new forms of devices, through the tools they develop and through their creation process. Hence, propositions in contemporary art always have a “new media” aim. The notion of media here refers to any form of structure, paradigm or network —whether scientific, economical, political, digital, technological or even social— where artists draw what they need to create. The ways of approaching art through new combinations divert, infiltrate and invent new means of creating, of producing, of making visible, of communicating.

Speakers as well as participants in the symposium are invited to locate their practice, their reflection and their experience as devices and artistic propositions, without disciplinary filters. Do artists organise their work in new ways? What do these new forms carry? What can be found behind the works? Which tradition or breach do they come from? The idea is to observe and document new media practices which are, by definition, unstable.

10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. | Structure

This roundtable discussion examines the structures established to help artists in their work. Whether we are talking about institutions, organisations or artist-run centers, we must observe that there are many models, adopting various approaches to meet needs that are difficult to identify, for artists who are just as difficult to identify.

Patrick Treguer: Manager of the Lieu multiple (digital creation of the Espace Mendes-France, in Poitiers).

With two examples which are part of the general programming of Lieu multiple, the artistic “telepresence project” and the “disabilities and digital culture workshops”, the objective is to present the ins and outs of such projects in a context of scientific and citizen culture.

Danyèle Alain: Director of artist-run center 3e impérial

For three decades, the 3e imperial, centre d’essai en art actuel, has been exploring the infiltrating art practices, an art of proximity that takes place in the realms of everyday life. These creations operate through a coproduction approach based on collaboration and exchange principles, governed by a set of processes, protocols and values that evolve continuously over time, and by an ongoing common reflection.

Jackie Sumell: Artiste (in English)

1:45 p.m.  – 3:15 p.m. | Method

How do new media artists work? Beyond the methods they already use, which models from various fields of the artistic practice could be adopted or adapted to structure the practice of new media? Various methods lead to various results. How do these methods guide and influence the contents? In short, how do these methods help define these practices?

Alain-Martin Richard: Artist (manœuvre and performance)

Media technologies today ease our way into the global panoptic of the planet and allow us to rig temporal collisions otherwise. In some cases, they even offer entirely new aesthetic experiences, especially in the ability to dislocate the senses.

Frédérique Laliberté: Artist

Performance presentation: Les àlenveritudes

Frédérique Laliberté is involved in a multitude of artistic groups which are more or less official, but quite active in Quebec City’s artistic community (On est tu heureux hen., The Ohio R, Rocket Team Team Rocket, PSSHHHIIIOOOUUU, Rodrigue Rodrigue Rodrigue Rodrigue Rodrigue Rodrigue Rodrigue, la Corrida B Bang, Ensemble c'est Tous, Un band de Zoulou Métal, La Chambre Blanche, Avatar). As far as she remembers, Frédérique has always liked drawing. And singing. That is how she learned to plug cables in the right way of the world.

Victoria Stanton: Artist (scenic performance)

Exploring with various media, performance acts as the central axis of her research. Based on presence and performative conscience, her practice gives account of a posture where negotiating with the other is a stake that is fundamental and that bears the potential of reciprocal transformation.

Julie Faubert

In a transdisciplinary perspective, Julie Faubert creates situations. She is interested in complex articulations that link the body and the mind when it comes to creating/constructing meaning. By questioning the multiple operations that generate, feed and assert our societies’ endemic conformism, she looks for ways to reactivate the sense of invention, the sense of what is different, un-thought of.

Nathalie Bachand

Nathalie Bachand is in charge of development at Elektra, international digital art festival, which also produces the Biennale internationale d’art numérique (BIAN). She has been the director of the publication project Angles arts numériques (2009) and a contributing author of the collective Tactiques insolites : vers une méthodologie de recherche en pratique artistique (2004). She writes about visual and media arts.
