Castafiore
Castafiore Bruit TTV (1995)

Castafiore is named for opera diva Bianca Castafiore of Hergé’s Tintin.

It is an unfinished suite from the Obscure artists centre for comic strip and pulverized instruments in a single movement filled with bizarre sounds. It addresses the theme of communication/noncommunication set to music/nonmusic in a free adaptation of Hergé’s cartoon and French philosopher Michel Serres’s writings on it. The texture is shot through with tiny bursts, a common artifact arising in digital productions, with their own particular quality of lightness. Normally they would be removed, but here they have been incorporated into the work, turning what would normally be considered a flaw into a quality of the listening experience. (After Jocelyn Robert.)
