In fall of 1999, Avatar and Villa Arson’s AudioLab sound studio in Nice undertook an artist exchange. The idea stemmed from the fact that Avatar and Villa Arson, one of France’s seven national arts centres, had much in common.

Avatar sent Joly and Tétreault for a research residency in France, where they were initiated into new concepts, software, and equipment. Lignon’s residency at Avatar was almost concurrent, and he presented a series of installations entitled Études pour expositions sans catalogue in December. Kerléo then came for a residency in Quebec City in 2000, where he presented a lighthearted, furtive sound installation that squeaked at regular intervals.
